パブロ・ルイス・ピカソは、1881年スペインアンダルシア地方のマラガ市で生まれましたが、1895年、14歳の時にバルセロナへ移住、美術学校に入学しました。1897年マドリードで開かれた国立美術展で入選し、同年秋、マドリードの王立サン・フェルナンド美術アカデミーに入学しますが退学し、1899年、18歳の時にバルセロナに戻ります。
その後活躍の舞台はパリとなり、1902年にパリに移住、その後1973年に92歳で南仏ニースで亡くなるまでフランスを舞台に活躍しましたが、バルセロナとフランスを行き来していました。
バルセロナにあるピカソ美術館はピカソのスペインにおける自宅を改造してオープンしたもので、生涯におよそ1万3500点の油絵と素描、10万点の版画、3万4000点の挿絵、300点の彫刻と陶器を制作し、最も多作な美術家であるとギネスプックに登録されているピカソのもっとも多くの作品が展示されている美術館でバルセロナを訪れる方は是非行かれてください。

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in 1881 in Málaga, in Spain’s Andalusia region. In 1895, at the age of 14, he moved to Barcelona and enrolled in an art school. In 1897, one of his works was accepted into the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid, and later that same year he entered the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. However, he soon dropped out and returned to Barcelona in 1899 at the age of 18.
After that, Paris became the center of his artistic activity. He moved to Paris in 1902 and, until his death in 1973 at the age of 92 in the south of France, he worked mainly in France while frequently traveling back and forth to Barcelona.
The Picasso Museum in Barcelona was created by converting Picasso’s former residence in Spain into a gallery. Picasso, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the most prolific artist in history, produced approximately 13,500 paintings and drawings, 100,000 prints, 34,000 book illustrations, and 300 sculptures and ceramic pieces in his lifetime. The museum houses the largest collection of his works on display, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Barcelona.
