19世紀末ガウディのライバルとして活躍した建築家がいました。その名はドゥメナク・ムンタネー
彼は建築学校の教授で、２歳年下のガウディに講義をしたこともあるそうです。
ドゥメナク・ムンタネーの代表作がカタルーニャ音楽堂です。
この時代のバルセロナは、産業の発展とともに人口が増加し、活気にあふれていました。そして経済力が備わるとともに、カタルーニャ文化の再生を目指す運動が起きます。そこで生まれたのがモデルニスモ建築です。
バルセロナの街を歩けば、いたるところでモデルニスモ建築に出合います。このカタルーニャ音楽堂もその一つです。ガウディは突出した人物ですが、この町に突然変異的に生まれてきたのではなく、当時の気風を表現した建築家の一人ひとりでした。
カタルーニャ音楽堂のある道に入る前に不思議なこの少女の像が立っています。
At the end of the 19th century, there was an architect who was considered a rival of Antoni Gaudí — his name was Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
He was a professor at the school of architecture and is said to have even taught lectures attended by Gaudí, who was two years younger.
Domènech i Montaner’s most celebrated masterpiece is the Palau de la Música Catalana (Catalan Concert Hall).
During this period, Barcelona was booming — industrial development brought rapid population growth, and the city was full of energy. As the economy strengthened, a movement emerged to revive Catalan culture. Out of this cultural awakening came the Modernisme (Catalan Art Nouveau) architectural style.
Walking through the streets of Barcelona, you will encounter Modernisme architecture everywhere, and the Palau de la Música Catalana is one of its shining examples. While Gaudí is often considered the standout genius of the era, he was not an isolated phenomenon — rather, he was one of many architects who expressed the spirit of the times through their work.
Before turning onto the street where the concert hall is located, you will find a curious statue of a young girl standing there, as if welcoming you.

見事なドゥメナク・ムンタネーの造形美です。It is a magnificent example of Domènech i Montaner’s architectural beauty.
こちらは拡大写真。ここにもありますが、ドゥメナク・ムンタネーは花模様を巧みに表したので「花の建築家」と呼ばれていたそうです。
Here is a close-up photo. As you can see, Domènech i Montaner skillfully incorporated floral motifs into his designs, which is why he was known as the “architect of flowers.”
